قال ابن كثير رحمه الله:
" وَأَمَّا أَهْلُ السُّنَّةِ وَالْجَمَاعَةِ فَيَقُولُونَ
في كلّ فعلٍ وقوْلٍ لم يَثبتْ عن الصَّحابةِ:
هُوَ بِدْعَةٌ؛
لِأَنَّهُ لو كان خَيْرًا لسبقونا إليه،
لأنهم لم يَتْرُكُوا خَصْلَةً منْ خِصَالِ الْخَيْرِ إِلَّا وقد بَادَرُوا إِلَيْهَا ".

Tafseer Ibn Katheer – v7, p278
Ibn Katheer said:
And as for Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamaa’ah, then regarding every action and speech which has not been [authentically] reported from the companions [of the Prophet ﷺ] – then they say it is an innovation.
That is because if there was any good in it, then they would have preceded us in it, since they did not leave any good practice except that they hastened to it.
