Standing the night in prayer
I never raised my head at night (i.e. woke up) except that I saw Moosaa ibn Abee ‘Aa.ishah standing in prayer.
Except the day when my mother passed away
I remained for forty years, and never [once] missed the initial takbeer [upon beginning the congregational prayer], except the day when my mother passed away.
That was not a treetrunk
O my son, that was not a [tree]trunk, that was Mansoor who [only] recently passed away.
He who speaks, laughs and jokes much
He who speaks much, laughs much and jokes much, then his dignity and respect is reduced, and he who persists in [doing] something, becomes known by it.
A dead heart
Never have those who enjoy, enjoyed; And never have their hearts sought to fly with anything like the beautiful recitation of the Qur.aan. And any heart which does not love the beautiful recitation of the Qur.aan is a dead heart.
He is certainly mad
Indeed, he who issues a ruling on everything a ruling is sought for, [then he] is certainly mad.
A quarter every day
It was narrated about ‘Urwah ibn Zubayr that he would read a quarter (just over seven ajzaa) of the Qur.aan every day.
Satisfied with cheating and deceit
It used to be said, [that] whoever is satisfied with cheating/deceit, then he is [regarded as being] from its people.
So as to engage himself in the remembrance of Allaah until sunset
After the ‘Asr prayer, Hassaan ibn ‘Atiyyah would retreat to a part of the masjid so as to engage himself in the remembrance of Allaah until sunset.
