Every night, Wakee' ibn al-Jarraah رحمه الله would not sleep until he had read a third of the Qur.aan. Then, during the last [third] of the night he would stand in prayer and recite the al-Mufassal.

ash-Shaafi'ee رحمه الله grieved at how the Muslims had neglected [the knowledge of] medicine, and he would say
A third of the Qur.aan
I spent the night [at the house of] Ibn 'Ulayyah, [during which] he read a third of the Qur.aan.
