I read the Qur.aan to ‘Umar [ibn al-Khataab] (radhi-yAllaahu ‘anhu) three times.
Studying the Qur.aan
When we had learnt ten aayahs [of the Qur.aan] from the Prophet ﷺ, we would not move on to the next ten [aayahs] which were revealed after them, until we had learnt what they contained of knowledge.
He was good to the students

Three essential characteristics
You will not be a scholar until you possess three characteristics.

[The ruler] al-Ma.moon gifted my father 30,000 [deenaars], 10 horses and a slave girl – and he did not accept them.
The error of his teacher
A man will not know the error of his teacher, until he sits with other than him.
Maintaining close attachment to the scholars
[In the pursuit for knowledge], I maintained close attachment to Shu’bah for twenty years.
The most knowledgeable of them
And the one whose knowledge most encompassed all of these matters was Sa’eed ibn Jubayr.
