Sa’eed ibn Jubayr would weep [whilst standing in prayer] at night until his eyes became bleary and he was unable to see clearly.

Ismaa’eel [ibn Zayd al-Jarjaanee] would write 90 pages [of knowledge] every night in small/fine writing.
They would divide the night into three
al-Hasan ibn Saalih, his brother and their mother used to divide the night into three parts, each would stand their third in prayer. So when their mother died, they divided the night in two parts, and when [his brother] ‘Alee died, Hasan stood the entire night in prayer.
As a result of elongating his prayer
‘Anas (radhi-yallaahu ‘anhu) used to pray until his feet swelled with blood, as a result of elongating his prayer, standing [in prayer] at night.
So he was not overcome by sleep
Safwaan ibn Saleem used to stand in prayer on the roof on a cold night so that he is not overcome by sleep.
Used to stand the night in prayer
Sa’eed ibn ‘Abdul-‘Azeez used to stand the night in prayer, and when the time of Fajr entered he would renew his wudhoo and leave [home] for the masjid.
Engaging in seeking forgiveness
Every night, Wakee’ ibn al-Jarraah would not sleep until he had read a third of the Qur.aan. Then, during the last [third] of the night he would stand in prayer and recite the al-Mufassal. He would then sit and engage in seeking forgiveness (al-istighfaar) until the arrival of Fajr.
Awake in prayer at night
I used to know Ahmad ibn Hanbal when he was [just] a little boy, and he would remain awake at night standing in prayer.
Sincere in his worship
If any member of the household entered upon ‘Abdur-Rahmaan ibn Abee Laylaa while he was [standing the night] praying, he would immediately jump into bed [out of humility, and remaining sincere in his worship to Allaah, and being far removed from showing off].
He would quietly stand the entire night in prayer
Ayyoob as-Sikhtiyaanee used to quietly stand the entire night in prayer, and in the morning [at the time of Fajr] he would raise his voice as if [giving the impression] he had just awoken at that time.
