Muhammad ibn al-Hajjaaj said:
There was a man who would listen [together] with us [as we studied] with Hammaad ibn Salamah; he then travelled to China. So when he returned, he gave Hammaad a gift, and Hammaad said to him:
If I accepted it from you, then I will not relate any [more] hadeeth to you; and if I do not accept it from you, then I will [continue to] relate hadeeth to you.
[So the man replied]:
Do not accept it, [I prefer that you continue to] relate [hadeeth] to me.
