Question: He has a desire to understand matters of the religion, tajweed and tafseer – and wants [some] guidance; so do you advise him with any particular books [to start with]?
Response: Firstly my brother, [start with] reading the Qur.aan; find someone who will help you in reading, because [learning how to read] the Qur.aan can only be achieved by being taught directly. It is imperative that you have a teacher who is proficient in reciting [the Qur.aan]; so you read to him and he will guide you and help you with that. [Always begin with] seek[ing] aid from Allaah, then when you start reading the Qur.aan with a proficient teacher, he will help you with tajweed and the correct pronunciation – and [all of] this is indeed a blessing from Allaah.
As for tafseer and fiqh, then find a scholar whose knowledge you are assured of, so he can guide you and help you with what you need, and assist you with choosing the appropriate subjects which will help you for the future.
