Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen said:

Likewise, do not interfere in [other] people’s affairs.

Don’t get involved – if it doesn’t concern you.

And this is contrary to what some people do today.

You’ll find some people eager to know [other] peoples’ business.

[If] they see two people talking, they try to get closer just to hear what they’re saying.

They might see someone coming from somewhere – and investigate, perhaps even directly asking the person –

“Where did you come from?”

“What did so-and-so say to you?”

”What did you say to him?”

– and that which is similar; [asking] about things that don’t concern them, and are of no importance to them.

So, if something doesn’t concern you, leave it.

That’s part of being a good Muslim, and it also brings peace – peace of mind for a person

[Every] person should only be concerned with themselves – this here is [real] peace.

As for the one who is [always] chasing after what others are doing, “what was said?”, and “what did they say?”, and “what was said to them?” – then they will exhaust themselves greatly, and miss out on much good.

In addition [to doing so], they will not benefit at all.

Let your concern revolve around yourself.

Focus on yourself.

Look at what benefits you, and do it.

If it doesn’t benefit you, leave it.

And it is not from you being a good Muslim to seek out things that do not concern you.

If only we pursued this [approach] – where a person focused on himself and only concerns himself with his own actions –

“What have I done?”

“What have I produced?”

– he would achieve much good.

But some people, you find them preoccupied with the affairs of others in matters where there is no benefit for them.

They waste their time, burden their hearts, scatter their thoughts, and miss out on many opportunities.

[In contrast] you find the diligent person, whose only concern is himself and what pertains to him – you will find that he is productive, fruitful, and achieves [results], and enjoys peace of heart and peace of mind.

And this hadeeth [we are studying] is considered from the comprehensive speech of the Prophet ﷺ

If you intend to do something or leave something [undone] – consider whether it concerns you or not.

If it doesn’t concern you, leave it.

Don’t get involved.

Free yourself from it.

Give your heart, your mind, and your body rest.

If it does concern you, then in any case be an intelligent person – as mentioned in the earlier hadeeth:

«The wise person is the one who holds himself accountable.» – at-Tirmidhee, no.2459 – and classified as hasan.

So every intelligent person strives to work for what comes after death, and holds themselves accountable for their actions.
